An acoustic electric guitar has built in pickup and/or microphone and maybe a preamp. An acoustic guitar does not have any electronics installed from the factory but you can add these on later.

An acoustic guitar can’t be plugged into an amplifier unless it has pickups and a micorphone installed after the fact, while an acoustic electric guitar comes equipped this way from the manufacturer.

An acoustic electric guitar is an acoustic guitar with pickups below the guitar nut and/or a microphone in the guitar’s body. A pickup converts the vibration of the strings into an electrical signal and this signal is carried through wires to the socket in which you plug in your amplifier.

Only acoustic electric guitars have the built in connector for cables. Regular acoustics don’t have the ability to connect to an amp without additional hardware or modification. So, an acoustic electric is really the best of both worlds because you can play and use it like a regular acoustic guitar buy you have the amplification abilities for when you need to play in a club or auditorium type setting.
