Dr. W asked:
What's a good acoustic guitar for a beginner? My budget is about $200 and I'd like to get a new acoustic guitar.
Thank you!

I think that in your price range you should look at an Epiphone or a Yamaha.
I like the Alvarez RD8SB…it’s a Dreadnought. It’s also supplied with a decent case. Depending on where you shop, you should be able to find one for $199.00. It’s available in several finishes. It sounds great and is much better than an Epiphone or a Yamaha.
I don’t like Yamaha at all, but I do like the Alvarez models. A good deal would be a solid top Alvarez mahogany for $239. That’s a real good deal.
Alvarez is a very good acoustic guitar and if you could find a used Alvarez guitar in a style that you like, I’d grab it.
I have had BOTH a Yamaha and an Epiphone and would recommend them both. Also, take a look at used Ibanez guitars.
I don’t recommend a cheap guitar for anybody that is serious about learning or playing acoustic guitar. I have had a few regretted them. I once had a Yamaha that looked and sounded good and was inexpensive. Later on, I had trouble keeping it in tune and the top started to lift.
Save your money and buy a good quality guitar. That way you will only have to spend your money once. It took me a long time to figure that out. If you buy cheap, sooner than later the sound will get to be something you won’t like. It is really hard to learn and enjoy playing with a guitar that sounds like crap.
You can spend a lot of money on a guitar, but $500.00 or so will get you new quality acoustic guitar that will last for a long time and give you hours of enjoyment. I own an Ovation and have had it for about seven years. It still sounds as good as it did new.
Based on my experience with this guitar, I would suggest that you look for a quality guitar, but buy a used acoustic guitar instead of a new one. Look for an owner that takes care of their guitars and you will be able to save some money by buying it used. Used that maney that you saved for lessons.
