What is the difference between the Taylor 412ce and 414ce acoustic guitars?

DoubleTrouble asked:

What's the difference between the Taylor 412ce Grand Concert and the 414ce Grand Auditiorium?

I'm looking into buying a really good and I've pretty much decided on Taylor. So far I've been playing a Gibson but I'd like to try one of these. Both of these cost about the same and I'm undecided between these two . I play in both plugged and unplugged settings.

Both of these guitars are acoustic electrics and are mid-priced in the Taylor lineup. Both the 412ce and 414ce have Sitka Spruce tops, Ovangkol backs and sides and Mahogany necks. They come supplied with the same Expression System electronics package. Pearl dots are used on the fretboard inlays, as is typical of the lower priced Taylors.

The main difference between these two guitars is the body shape. The Grand Auditoriums (GA) are a little bit bigger in the body dimensions for the length, width and depth than the Grand Concerts (GC).

The GA has the same dimensions of a Dreadnought, but it has a tapered waist making it comfortable to play. The tonal balance means it’s full in the lower register, present in the midrange, and sparkling on the treble strings.

The Taylor GC series body styles were originally developed and designed for fingerpicking. It has a more balanced sound from the bass to the treble.

Of these two styles, the Grand Auditoriums series such as the 414ce are much more popular and are more readily available…particularly in the secondary market. In any case, play both of these guitars and pick the sound that you prefer.
