Chazzer asked:
I'd really like to protect the used acoustic guitar that I just got on eBay, a Taylor 814ce. I've read some of the Taylor tech notes and they say that I must keep the humidity at a certain level and to use a guitar humidifier. What is the best humidifier to get?
The best humidifers are whole house humidifiers. A specialized version of those are found in high end guitar shops where they have a special room for their acoustic guitars with a controlled environment. However, these are usually not found in most people’s homes.
The important thing, as far as your acoustic guitar is concerned, is to maintain the humidity level at 50% or so. The easiest way to do that is to keep the guitar in it’s case unless when you are not using it and to keep a guitar humidifier in the closed case with the guitar. Monitor the water level of the humidifier on a routine basis and keep it adequately wetted.
Some pretty good guitar humidifiers are available, and they’re actually pretty cheap. There’s the wick type humidifier that’s pretty common, but it generally holds water for a short period of time and needs more attention. As far as I’m concerned, the best one is the Planet Waves guitar humidifier and I’ve been using one for years.
