Adam Halsey asked:

I've saved some money and I'm looking for a good acoustic electric guitar that I will keep. I'm looking for guitars in the $500-1000 range.

I started out looking for Ovation guitars because I'm familiar with them. However, I played some Alvarez guitars in the music store and they have caught my fancy and are well within my price range.

Does anybody play an Alvarez, and if so do you/did you think that it was worth the money. Anything else in this price range that you would recommend?

The Alvarez Artist Series are great great acoustic guitars. They are especially suited for 12 gauge strings and they have great pickups in their acoustic electric line. I like the Alvarez guitars a lot better than Ovations. The only other guitar that I’d suggest for a great sounding electronics package is the Takamines.

For your budget, I’d take a closer look at some used Gibson and Taylor acoustic guitars before settling for an Alvarez. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Alvarez makes a nice acoustic guitar in your price range if you want a new guitar, but a used Taylor for the money you have will get you the most guitar for what you want to spend.

I’m a Taylor guitar girl all the way, because I just love the sound and the quality of their guitars. But when I got mine, I bought a new Taylor 114e and pretty much depleted my savings acount. Try checking eBay for some used ones and you might be surprised with what you can find.
