It all depends. An acoustic electric guitar with a plywood top from Ibanez, Dean, Epiphone or Takamine can sound pretty good to start with and will sound better when amplified. You can find some decent sounding guitars with plywood tops for around $300.00 or so new and a little less used.
A solid top acoustic electric guitar made from spruce would cost more. A solid top acoustic guitar will usually sound better…expecially if it’s not amplified. Generally, bodies on acoustic and acoustic electric guitars increase in size as the price goes up and this results in a better sounding guitar that projects better when unamplified.
A high end acoustic guitar from Gibson, Martin or Taylor will easily cost you a thousand bucks or more, but in my opinion they are well worth it because they sound great. If you are serious about learning and playing guitar, avoid the cheapest models because you’ll get more for your money with the better guitar brands. You can find substantial savings by buying a high end used acoustic electric guitar.
Take your time when looking to purchase a used acoustic guitar. Make sure the guitar plays well, you like its’ sound and the chords play in tune. Make especially sure that the neck is straight, the frets are not worn, the tuners are tight and funtional and that there is no warping, swelling or cracking in the body.
If you are new to the guitar you might find more peace of mind by buying a new guitar with a good warranty. However, whether you buy a new or used acoustic electric guitar, you should spend a little extra money and have it set up and fine-tuned by a pro.
