You dont have to but your fingers will hurt if you are just learning, so I’d recommend starting out with one.
Other than that, just buy some instructional books and enjoy yourself.
You don’t have to use a guitar pick, but it’s a lot easier to learn with one.
It mostly depends on the sound that you’re trying to get.
You don’t need a pick for acoustic guitar and many acoustic guitar players don’t use picks.
You don’t need to use a pick but many guitar players prefer using one. If you are new to guitar it will be easier for you to learn while using a pick and when you gain some experience you can try playing withough one.
You don’t need to play guitar with a pick, but it takes lots of practice. Since you’re a beginner I’d suggest that you learn using a pick since it’s easier to learn and play acoustic guitar that way.
As others have said, it depends on your own preference. You can either use a pick, your fingers, or both. Picks are just about the cheapest thing you’re gonna buy for your guitar, so pick up a few different kinds and try playing with different types to see if you prefer one type over the others? Then, if you find one that you like just keep using it.
Guitar tabs are pretty easy to read and many beginners use them because they understand them. It’s basically just a diagram showing you where to put your fingers on the strings at the specified fret position. Try to get your hands on a tablature book or search around the net for tab instructions and you’ll see what tabs look like and how you can play chords and songs using them.
You don’t have to use a pick but most guitar players use one.ou want to. Playing with your fingers is known as fingerstyle or fingerpicking.
The best tip that I can give you is to practice every day. Be consistent and diligent with this, even if it’s only for thirty minutes. Try to learn a couple of new chords a week and play songs that have these chords in them so you will practice your transition to them from another position. Try to learn some scales, too..
A pick is not necessary and I myself don’t use one. If you want to learn to play without a pick you should probably find a music teacher that can play finger style. Most people that try on their own will stop after a couple of weeks because initially it is hard to learn and uncomfortable to play that way. Just make sure that you find a guitar teacher that is qualified with this sytle of playing guitar and ask him or her to demonstrate their abilities before you agree to anything.
I started out using no picks at all but began using a thumb pick and grew the right hand nails until they were long and strong enough to play with. This is how Merle Travis and Chet Atkins and Merle finger pick and play. At times I’ll just play with no pick at all because I lie the sound better for certain songs.
This method requires that a callous forms on the thumb, and practice and dexterity excercises bring about the speed. In rhythm patterns I use both downward and upward strokes with this method.
There are several products available that will toughen your nails and I’ve found them to be beneficial to use. You will also need to trim your nails more frequently that you might be doing now.
You can use a pick or your fingernails…fingernails on the downstroke and thumbnail on the upstroke.
You can also try playing fingerstyle guitar. It’s not just for classical music. Some guitarists that have used fingerstyle playing include Mark Knopfler, Lyndsey Buckingham, Ritchie Blackmore, Richard Thompson and Eric Clapton.
