Martin Guitars are produced by the C. F. Martin & Company, founded by Christian Frederick Martin, whose background was in cabinent making, in 1833. They are located in Nazareth, Pennsylvania but also have manufacturing facilities in Mexico.
The company's innovative X-bracing system was incorporated in their guitar manufacturing process in the 1850s to provide for the structural integrity of the guitar body and accommodate the tension caused by the use of steel guitar strings. This technology was widely copied by Martin's competitors at the time and is a common feature of acoustic guitars today.
