The Gibson Guitar Company was originally founded as the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Manufacturing, Co., Ltd. by Orville Gibson in 1902. In the twenties, thirties and forties they were noted for their improved mandolin designs and archtop guitars, but decided to produce solid body electric guitars in the fifties with the release of the Les Paul model due to the success of the Fender Telecaster, followed by the Explorer, Flying V and the ES-335. When its' body style was changed in 1961 Les Paul dropped his endorsement of these guitars and this newly styled guitar was rebranded as the SG. Subsequently, the Les Paul model returned to Gibson in 1968.
Currently, Gibson's acoustic guitar line (new releases and reissues) includes: Modern Classics, True Vintage, Legends Series, Signature Artists Series, Songwriter Series and Songmaker Series.
