The Epiphone Company began in 1873 and was bought by Gibson in the late fifties. Ephipone was one of Gibson's main competitors in the archtop guitar market. Epiphone guitars are built in Asia and are principally known for their manufacturer of cheaper versions of the Gibson guitars. Unique Epiphone models generally offer a higher quality guitar, as compared to the Gibson copies that are produced.
